This post is for World Bird Wednesday.
Several times over the last few weeks I have heard a strange bird call out in my yard. When I went out to see what it was the Spangled Drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus) flew off. As well as their own harsh metallic cry they are great mimics. It happened again the other afternoon but this time I went out quietly and the bird stayed in the grevillea tree where it was feeding.
I am sorry Mick but only a bird in Oz could be called a Drongo!
ReplyDeleteJoking aside it's a beauty.
Many thanks for sharing your lovely images.
We have a similar bird here in the states called a Bronzed Cowbird. It has red eyes like your drongo and the cowbirds also have a metallic call. Yours looks even larger and chunkier. Nice shots.
ReplyDeletewow! he looks like a powerful little thing! i like him!
ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting bird. The heavy bill reminds me of a raven's, but maybe the Drongo isn't that large.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit!

ReplyDeleteI wonder if it is similar to our cowbird as Kathie said. I adore their song.
ReplyDeleteThe tree and the bird fits together. :) I like when I see things like that.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! Your stealthiness paid off big time. The light in these pictures is phenomenal. That is one heavy duty bird!
ReplyDeleteHe looks sort of like our Crow or Raven! Lovely capture!
ReplyDeleteGreat captures Mick! Gee, your Grevillea is flowering, our Grevillea robusta has not yet lost it's leaves.
ReplyDeleteThat Drongo is one cool dude.
Fascinating bird with those red piercing eyes. Love the colors in your shots!
ReplyDeleteThe Spangled Drongo is quite the title! A bird with that name has to be spectacular and it is. Love the iridescence. You have portrayed them beautifully Mick.
