This post is for World Bird Wednesday.
When the boat came closer to one group I saw that they were Gannets. The skipper of the boat said that they only saw Gannets in this area during the winter months.
Gannets are wonderful divers and we saw several dive after fish while we were watching. I was not fast enough to get photos of them diving but did manage some in-flight photos.
You were very lucky to be able to get that close to the Australasian Gannet.Beautiful photos.
ReplyDeletewow. they're so 'perfect' looking, they almost look like a cartoon - like the puffins do. :)
ReplyDeleteSuper shots Mick and they look so much like Northern Gannet it's not true.
ReplyDeleteThey are so lovely Mick!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

Wonderful shots Mick. The in-flights are really awesome! Such a regal looking bird too. That beak is a thing of beauty! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of in-flight! Never seen these guys before.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of the Gannets, especially against the blue sea.
ReplyDeleteHi there - I'm lucky enough to have been out to a colony of these birds in the middle of Port Phillip Bay - splendid birds.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that I could ever get tired of watching them. Great birds.
Funny how you say that you have only seen the Red-Tails flying up from beside the road - that’s pretty much all I had seen until I went to Magnetic Island.
Cheers. Stewart M
