Common Greenshanks

This post is for the Bird Photography Weekly.

I was kayaking the other day when I saw some Common Greenshanks on a sandbank. I let the wind and tide drift me in toward them and was able to get some good close photos. However, the really interesting photos showed the feathers on the backs of the birds' heads. They made a definite line down the middle of the back of the head. It reminded me of that hair style from years ago where both sides were brushed back and towards the back of the head!

  2. You are the second birder recently to mention kayaking. I guess that would be a great way to get great images.

  3. lol, yes guys used to look like that from behind. You really got good shots today. I love it. The back shot looks like it is walking on a catwalk. :)

  4. Hi Mick
Have you gone for a longer lens (again) or were jou just more patient?
Stunning photos and much closer than previous similar images (or so it seems to me).
Loved the "Catwalk" shot (agreeing with NatureFootstep).

  6. Thanks to all for your comments. I'm glad some others remembered 'those' hairstyles!
Denis, I only use the 300mm lens while in the kayak. I doubt that I could hold the bigger one! So the closer photos were a series of good luck! The birds were in the right place, and the wind and the tide were just right to drift me in. Greenshanks take off at any movement.
