White-faced Heron.

These birds are very difficult to get close to in my area but down on the Noosa River they are much less wary. This one came walking over to see if we had any fish scraps it could take.
Later we watched a fisherman come in and pull his boat up on the bank. As soon as he turned his back this White-faced Heron hopped right into the boat and began looking for any scraps on the bottom of the boat. It only moved off when the fisherman came right back to his boat.

  1. Beautiful bird Mick, nice captures too! I guess you know where to go now to get close to them.

Isn't it strange how the same species of bird may be impossible to get close to in one location and can barely be shooed away in another?

  2. Terrific photos of your Heron, Mick. Must be nice to have a bird come a bit closer for a change.

  4. I love the photo of the heron hanging out on the boat for scraps. - It seems almost pet like. ;)

  5. Lovely shots Mick. This one seems to have learnt how to get fish the easy way.

Over here the grey herons stand next to guys fishing in the canals, it's quite a comical sight.

  6. Hi Tranquility and Gwendolen, thanks for your comments. It would be fun to see herons standing next to fishermen and waiting - hopefully!

  7. ...I would love to have been the fisherman...and had my camera ready! He is a very pretty bird. I love the whit on his face--unlike anything we have here. I've found the same thing...in certain locations birds are less wary.

  8. That's a beautiful Heron Mick! Here in Maine the Great Blue Herons are very skiddish.

  9. Outstanding shot of the heron, Mick. Very opportunistic bird, that heron, you could say to it: "Fancy a scrap?" :-)

  11. Oh, those are lovely captures!
How amazing that they let you get so close.
But no surprise, when they are used to the fish scraps, grin :)

  14. This heron looks similar to the great blue heron we have in the US, but our herons are all shy. This one was quite the character I think..Last summer a little green heron and one of the blue herons got into an argument over which one was going to fish from our lawn. They both make a barking like noise, so it sounded like a couple of dogs..very funny...Michelle

  15. Thanks for visiting My Muskoka, Mick! And, yes, we name the critters. It may be silly, but it makes it easier to talk about them and make up stories. OK, I guess that is silly, too, but come January we need things to do on the frozen land.

I have never seen a heron like this one. Excellent photos!

  16. I could only wish my heron was as human friendly as that, he is shy as billi-o.
    Lovely captures.

  17. Again, another great series of photo's. That first pic looks as if your almost standing over the heron. The closest I've mananged to get to W F heron here in tassie for a photo is about 20 feet! Excelent photo's.
