These birds are very common around my yard and since they are also very noisy they really can't be ignored. With their bare black head and strange knob on the bill they really can't be confused with any other bird. The feathers under the chin are rather beautiful when they put back their head and start their very noisy call. Thanks Larry for finding a good recording of the bird's call HERE.

Nice action shot.
ReplyDeleteNow if we could post sound files ....
Cheers
Denis
Thanks Denis, I used to have the video with sound on the Canon S2 - but now that is just a second camera to carry and too much. So no sound - sorry!
ReplyDeleteWe occasionally see Noisy Friarbirds here but Helmeted Friarbirds are always about. Both species are noisy but nonetheless interesting and I love the detail in your photos.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Barbara
...he is a very strange bird indeed! I like his featherless head and that small bump!! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat photos - well worth embiggening. I'm always amused how one birder's common species is another birder's exciting lifer - it makes birding trips with people from different locations very interesting.
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, Kelly and Wren. Barbara, I'd like to see the Helmeted Friarbirds you have. Maybe someday! And its fun to look at birds from other places - even if the ones from overseas I may never see.
ReplyDeleteVery cool looking bird Mick. Rather handsome I think in an unusual way. I would love to see one someday.
ReplyDeleteI searched the net and found this birds very interesting call here.
Thanks for sharing Mick.
Thanks Larry for finding that recording of the bird's call. I have posted it on my blog now.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful captures Mick, the neck feathers are quite cute the way they fluff up like a pom-pom. Thanks for including the call as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Arija I hadn't thought of it before but those neck feathers do look like a pom-pom! Thanks to Larry for finding the call.
ReplyDeleteWow, they are noisy indeed. I like the photo showing the bird with it's head back ready to make the "noise".
ReplyDeleteThose are such strange looking birds. I've heard of them, but never seen one in real life. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting Bob and Cynthia and Tranquility.
ReplyDeleteYet another new species for me. Great images and as always a great BPW post, Mick!
ReplyDeleteHi Mick,

I think I have seen them twice when I lived in Sydney before...
They are great looking birds and I love to call. (I love the Wattlebird calls too)
