Sun, Sand and Sea

Inskip Point was beautiful today - as it usually is! I was out there at low tide so the bay which is south of the Point was mostly sand flats rather than water.
The extensive sand flats are ideal for shorebirds hunting food at low tide. Terns roost out on the sand flats as far from disturbance as possible. I saw a small flock of Crested Terns there today. Most still look rather 'scruffy' in their non-breeding plumage. It will be a few weeks yet before they display their full breeding plumage.

There is a very narrow neck of land between the top of the bay and the open ocean. From the open ocean side there is a great view south towards Rainbow Beach. The name - Rainbow Beach - was given because of the colored sand in the cliffs south of town which stretch left in the photo.

Visit SWF today.

  2. Mick, these are lovely images of a part of Australia that I do not get to visit. I do like the truck on the sand in the bottom photo - spells freedom to me.

  7. G'day Mick,
Yeah, I endorse all the above comments, particularly about your last image. There's a decent frost on the ground down here in Vic this morning and I just audibly groaned when the full screen image came up.
Anyway, frost usually means a nice day and DF and I are off orchid hunting, so you never know!

  10. Lppks like a glotious day. Freat photos too.

I've been to Rainbow beach 926 years ago) there used to be a shipwreck (the Cherry Venture) there. That was also the first place I ever seen a tern or at least the first time I'd noticed.

Now, in the 2nd tern photo, the bird on the right has no apparent crest. Is that quite normal. Do they relax the crest is it and age/seasonal plumage thing. It the only photo I've seen so far where the birds has a hair cut like this one (scroll down)

  11. Hi Mosura, the Cherry Venture is still marked on the maps - but I don't have a 4wheel drive vehicle so have never been down the beach that far. About the Crested Terns - I have seen the crest raised and not showing much at all - this is similar with juvenile birds as well - although the very young will show very little crest. I am at present putting together my tern pics to show birds over the 2 year range and will possibly do a longer post on it later. I also need some more advice from the expert I refer my questions to. I hope I have got at least this much right. It is a whole lot more complicated than at first appears.

That would make any interesting post.

    By the way -

  13. Hi Mosura again - "- I'm not quite that old."....well I realized that! You couldn't take such great photos if your hand was shaky and 926 years old!

  21. Here's the deal. Swap Yellow-billed Spoonbill for the invisible Black-breasted Button-Quail.

Saw Cherry Venture in '79 and as Kiwi journo helped publicise (and destroy) Noosa.

  22. Hi Jules, glad you could visit and you are certainly in a very exotic location now!

  23. Hi Tony, the Black-breasted Button-Quail is not invisible! You just have to go out to Inskip looking for something else and they magically appear at your feet! Wow! Noosa has sure changed since then!
