At the Water's Edge

This post is for World Bird Wednesday.

It was an almost perfect morning - still and bright but a bit chilly. The tide was on the way out and the birds were all looking for food right at the edge of the water. I saw migratory birds - Godwits, Whimbrels, Eastern Curlews, - and local birds - Gull-billed Terns, Egrets, and Masked Lapwings. None of them were close enough for good photos of individual birds. It is a perfect environment for shorebirds and recognized as such by its status as a Ramsar wetlands site. In another couple of months there will be hundreds of migratory shorebirds returning to this bay. All photos enlarge when clicked on.

  1. the blues and strips of land make for interesting photos, even if the shorebirds did not want to come in close.

  6. I have been thinking about bird photography and how we obsess over close-ups. Why don't we back up a little and see the whole scene as you've shown us? It really says so much more!

  16. Chilly sounds so good when you are roasting at 50C ;-)
But only one more week and I will be freezing in Germany :P

It is still totally weird to me that you see the same birds there as I do here (minus masked Lapwings, those would be new to me) :)

It is truly a gorgeous place for birding there!

  17. Those are beautiful photos and really capture the essence of a wetland -- one of our favorite kind of spaces.

Love the honeyeater in the post below. The wetlands seem kind of familiar (because we do spend a lot of time near them) but the honeyeater definitely reminds me you're in a different place altogether! Thanks for sharing.
