This bird - the Noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatus) - is also very common in my yard and on my grevillea bushes. However, unlike the Rainbow Lorikeet, it is not so photogenic nor does it enjoy having me take its photo. It used to be called the 'Leatherhead' because its head is covered with black skin instead of feathers. Adding to its unusual appearance is an upright knob on its beak.

Great shots of the Noisy Friarbird Mick! I really like that first one. It really shows how the feathers sweep around its neck.
ReplyDeleteVery good pics Mick and what an unusual bird. I'm going to google it and read a bit more.
ReplyDeleteNot the prettiest bird of the yard, but it still manages to look quite handsome in that first photo. Great pics, Mick.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting Larry, Phil, and Gwendolen. I should have mentioned that it is like its name - noisy! You really can't miss them if they are somewhere around the yard.
ReplyDeleteI love to see the different birds which visit your garden. The leatherhead certainly looks very different.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos, it is an interesting looking bird. And it is nice to see your common yard birds.
ReplyDeleteHi John and Eileen, I always find it interesting to see the birds that are 'common' in other places. There are so many different birds that it's no wonder some folks amass HUGE life lists!
ReplyDeleteI agree, the first photo is my favorite. Excellent photos Mick!
ReplyDeleteGreat bird, Mick - Even before seeing your comment I was sure that its name indicated it would be hard to miss.
ReplyDeleteTrue, it's not particularly photogenic, but for those of us who like vultures and other somewhat unsightly critters, it's a gem.
Thanks for commenting BirdingMaine and Wren.
ReplyDeletereally interesting bird! he's a little goofy looking but i like him! How big is he? great shots!
ReplyDeletestrange somehow. What is common where you live I have never even seen on a photo. Seems to be a special kind of bird. Glad you shared it. :)
ReplyDeleteHi JN - the bird is what I would call medium sized and the book says 25-29cms.
ReplyDeleteHi NatureFootstep most of the northern hemisphere birds are similarly strange to me!
Does it only look quite big or is it not? Interesting bird.
ReplyDeleteG'day Mick,
ReplyDeleteNoisy Friars - only their mothers could luv 'em!
Rainbows - I'm with Tony, beautiful bullies!
Nice captures.
