Norman Point

What a difference a few days makes. The first photo was taken on Sunday and the second photo on Wednesday - both looking east from Norman Point in Tin Can Bay.
This next photo was taken just an hour ago this morning. Five minutes after this the rain had set in again.
This photo zooms in on one of the boats out in the bay. My Dad loved all sailing boats. He had vivid memories of traveling on a sailing ship when he was a young boy.
There were numbers of Bar-tailed Godwits feeding out on the flats. All were at slightly different stages of moult into breeding plumage. All were feeding voraciously and hurrying from one suitable feeding spot to another.
This group of Godwits was in the curve of the bay just south from Norman Point this morning. It was raining and I was trying to keep the camera sheltered. Most of the Godwits were sleeping but even then one was still on the look-out for food.

  1. Lighting conditions are very variable here also. One minute bright sunshine and the next minute dark clouds.
Lots of wading birds there by the look of things.
Great shot of the sailing ship.

  2. Hi John, Yes there are still lots of waders around and it is really frustrating not to have nice sunny weather to get out and photograph all the great breeding colors. Well, at least it's not cold!

  3. The Godwits look awesome! The Red-necked Stints here are also starting to show nice breeding plummage.

  4. Love the deep coloured Godwits, but I like the shots of yachts for a bit of nostalgia for your Dad, too.
    Cheers

  5. Hi Mark, I haven't seen any Stints since the bad weather started a bit more than 2 weeks ago. I'm sure they are there but they are out where I and my equipment would get wet! Hope they hang around for a bit longer and I also hope the weather clears up soon.

Hi Denis, The bright coloring on the Godwits is a special part of this time of the year. Dad loved boats and he always shared his excitement with his family. It's nice to remember this even after a number of years.
