Female Zebra Finch

I followed a new bird noise in my yard the other day and found this female Zebra Finch perched in a tree. The male is a much more striking color but both have the distinctive red beak and legs. It is the first time I have seen any of these birds in my yard and I am told they are uncommon down here on the coast. For more bird photos visit the Bird Photography Weekly.

  1. I love zebra finches! Unfortunately, those that I see are all in cages. :(

I'm glad there's still a wild population of this species.

  2. Hi Bob, there are lots of them - in the right places! and here on the coast is not really the right habitat.

  3. I hope more turn up. They're such funny little things --- and gorgeous to look at.

  4. Yes, I'd like more of the little birds to come into the garden. There are enough dense trees and shrubs well off the ground now. I didn't encourage them here until they had higher places to keep away from my animals.

  6. Thanks Eileen - I'm glad this one is in my garden and not in a cage somewhere. Much more fun to see it in the trees!

  7. What a beautiful find!
    Aren't you lucky?

Wonder what got them down to your area.

  8. Hi Nicole. No idea why it was here. The usual explanation, of course, is that it could be an escapee from a cage somewhere close - OR - we have had such strange weather this season that it might just have moved here from further inland.
