Over the last few weeks a small flock of these birds has been wandering through the vacant blocks around my house. In pasture land such as these vacant blocks they will eat grubs and insects. They also feed around water where they will eat small aquatic creatures and even frogs or small snakes. Something disturbed these birds the other afternoon and they flew up over my house.

Great colour on the shoulder.
ReplyDeleteShe's posing very nicely there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a striking ibis. I couldn't help but notice the size of his legs two. Nice images.
ReplyDeleteTwo great photos. It will not suffer from cold draughts on its neck the way the feathers grow. Very subtle shades of colour in the first shot and clear markings on those in flight. How lovely to have them come so close and to fly overhead.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots Mick, both in profile and the trio in flight.
ReplyDeleteHi Neil, Madahmas, Vickie, and John - thanks for your comments. The sheen on the dark feathers came out nicely in those photos. Seen from a different angle they are just plain black!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a striking bird. I'm assuming their preferred habitat is near water? Enjoying seeing some Aussie birds on Bird Photography Weekly this time around!
ReplyDeleteMick, the shoulder colours remind me of Northern Lapwing. Great shots.
ReplyDeleteHi Heather, thanks for commenting. Yes much of the time these birds do live near water.
ReplyDeleteHi Frank, its good to see black is not just black! I think it makes the sheen on the feathers even more dramatic.
Hi Mick.
ReplyDeleteNice to see Ibis as well as your normal favourite waders and terns.
Lovely healthy gloss on that main photo.
I love the way they fly - they make it look easy, but that is because of their efficiency.
Cheers'
Denis
I am always amazed at how many of these fantastic birds come to your place. And to pose for these great photos! You are one lucky mate.
ReplyDeleteHi Denis and Bob and Cynthia. I didn't mention that as they flew off they made a most disgusted noise - part grunt and part squark - definitely not matching a beautiful looking bird!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of the Ibis! How wonderful to have them in the neighborhood!
ReplyDeletelove the first one best, great pose and composition.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting-looking bird, and how cool that he's wondering around by your yard!
ReplyDeleteI think all Ibisses make an awful noise. You should hear the Hadeda, Mick.
ReplyDeleteNice captures of the Straw-necked Ibis Mick! The three in flight against the blue sky show that great silhouette these birds create in their flight pattern.
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice bird to have nearby. Very nice photos Mick!
