Black-breasted Button-quail
Yes! Finally! After five years I have been lucky! I was walking down the bush track at Inskip Point yesterday afternoon and a little bird walked quickly across in front of me. This part of the track was shaded and I had just been photographing birds up against the light so I had the wrong camera settings - but no matter. Point and shoot! And I was lucky! I don't think it had seen me until it was across but it must have warned the other three in the group because they scooted across so fast that all the rest of the photos were blurred. However, I will post one of these blurred ones because the colors show slightly differently. Here's hoping that I have another try and get better photos next time!

Nice one Mick, my sightings (very few) of Common Quail have been so brief I often wondered if I'd actually seen them.
ReplyDeleteHi Frank, I remember often seeing quail in New Zealand where I grew up - but these little Black-breasted ones are notoriously difficult to see.
ReplyDeleteGood on you! Any sighting would have done me when I spent two fruitless days and nights on Inskip a few years back looking for BBBQs. Didn't even find saucer circles!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tony. At present there are lots of little 'saucer circles' - but it appears to me that they don't often tell you where the quail actually are.
ReplyDeleteYou'll get them Mick, the first time is the circuit breaker.
ReplyDeleteHi Duncan, that's great positive thinking! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on getting these skulky birds!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting such an elusive bird Mick - doesn't it make you feel good :D
ReplyDeleteBlurred or not, you should be pleased to get a shot at all methinks :)
Thanks Bob and Cynthia.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tricia also. Yes, I was so excited to see these birds - the photos were an extra bonus!
Wow! You did it! :D :D
ReplyDeleteThanks Tilcheff. It's a nice feeling of achievement.
ReplyDeleteQuails are so skiddish. I think you've got some really nice photos here. This kind has interesting eyes...a bit of light in the midst of all that brown.
ReplyDeleteHi Vickie, they're very hard to see let alone get close to.
